چکیده

This paper describes recent biosynthetic and enzymological studies from a number of laboratories and relates them to our current understanding of the pathways of carotenoid formation. A number of problems concerning phytoene biosynthesis and dehydrogenation are discussed and the work of our own laboratory on the biosynthesis of the triterpenoid carotenoids is reviewed.

Subcellular Localization of Carotenoid Biosynthesis in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

The biosynthesis pathway of carotenoids in cyanobacteria is partly described. However, the subcellular localization of individual steps is so far unknown. Carotenoid analysis of different membrane subfractions in Synechocystis sp. PCC6803 shows that "light" plasma membranes have a high carotenoid/protein ratio, when compared to "heavier" plasma membranes or thylakoids. The localization of CrtQ ...

Molecular genetics of the carotenoid biosynthesis pathway in plants and algae

During recent years genes for more than 20 different carotenogenic enzymes have been cloned from various organisms: bacteria, cyanobacteria, fungi, algae and plants. This accomplishment has provided new molecular tools to study the enzymes and yielded new information on their structure, function and regulation. We describe here the recent progress in the molecular genetics of the carotenoid bio...

Carotenoid-related alteration of cell membrane fluidity impacts Staphylococcus aureus susceptibility to host defense peptides.

Carotenoid pigments of Staphylococcus aureus provide integrity to its cell membrane (CM) and limit oxidative host defense mechanisms. However, the role of carotenoids in staphylococcal resistance to nonoxidative host defenses has not been characterized. The current study examined the relationship among CM carotenoid content, membrane order, and in vitro susceptibility to daptomycin or to protot...

Carotenoid Biosynthesis and their Regulation in Citrus Fruits

Carotenoids are the main pigments responsible for the attractive color of the peel and pulp of citrus fruits and greatly contribute to their nutritional and antioxidant value. Fruits of different Citrus species display a broad array of color singularities and in many cultivars the peel and the pulp also exhibit different color, envisaging specieand tissuespecific regulation of the carotenoid co...

Biological role of pigment production for the bacterial phytopathogen Pantoea stewartii subsp. stewartii.

Pantoea stewartii subsp. stewartii, the causal agent of Stewart's wilt of sweet corn, produces a yellow carotenoid pigment. A nonpigmented mutant was selected from a bank of mutants generated by random transposon mutagenesis. The transposon insertion site was mapped to the crtB gene, encoding a putative phytoene synthase, an enzyme involved in the early steps of carotenoid biosynthesis. We demo...
